Goverment House, Hongkong, 15th August, 1901.

2. Mr. Wise has always performed his duties as Puisne Judge to the entire satisfaction of the Community and I recommend his application for your favourable consideration.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient Humble servant, Governor, &c.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P., &c. &c.

If you agree

Answer that if or when Sir J. Carrington's retirement takes place, Mr. Wise's claims will be considered with those of others.

Let Mr. Cox see when he returns. I think the Chief Justiceship when vacant might well be filled by the transfer of a Chief Justice from some colony.

I. M. Goodman be given the vacancy thus created, if it is a good place; if not, I think he should have the Chief Justiceship of Hongkong.

He was, it will be remembered, of British Honduras.
